How to Remove Odor from a Wool Blanket
Something we often get questions and reactions about is the smell of wool. You either love it or you hate it! Wool is a natural product and can smell like: sheep (Stable, Manure... I've seen a lot of it). You can compare it to a new leather bag, jacket, or shoes. The smell of leather can sometimes last for weeks, but this goes away over time. If you want to use it right away and you find the smell unpleasant, you want to speed up this process. Below we share some tips to reduce the smell.
Air your wool blanket to reduce odor
Air your wool blanket outside where it will not get wet or in a well-ventilated room. When you are already using the wool blanket or wool underlay, air the room well to get rid of the smell. Over time, the wool will take on the smell of the room.
Reduce the odor of your wool blanket with a fragrance spray
Spraying your wool blanket with an essential spray will help remove the smell from your wool blanket. Spray sparingly and make sure the wool does not get soaking wet. Please note that if you do this, the product cannot be returned.
Remove the smell of wool with scented sachets
Wool takes on the smell of its surroundings. By placing the wool blanket in a sealed bag or an empty cupboard with scented bags, the wool will take on this smell. On the internet, there are also stories of people who put the wool in a laundry bag in the dryer for 20-30 minutes (at 30 degrees) with a scented bag. We have no experience with this ourselves and would not recommend it directly.
Snow removes the odor from your wool
If you are lucky enough to have snow, take advantage of it. Place your wool blanket, sheepskin or underlay in the snow to remove the smell. Place it in the snow for a day with the upper side and then beat it out well. Then hang it up to dry (not near the heater). Only do this when it is below freezing and the snow is crisp and dry.
Steam and mist reduces the odor in your wool
Hang your woolen fleece, blanket or underlay in the mist. Make sure it does not get soaking wet but slightly damp from the steam. Then hang it in a well-ventilated area to dry. Instead of hanging it in the mist, you could also hang your woolen fleece, blanket or underlay in the bathroom while there is steam from the shower.
Wool blanket Wash to reduce odor
Only wash your wool blanket when absolutely necessary. If you want to reduce the smell, try one of the methods above. You really shouldn't wash a fur at all, the leather on the bottom becomes hard and stiff when it gets soaking wet. This is actually impossible to get right.
