Washing a woolen underlay

Maintaining a wool crib underlay

We recommend washing your wool crib underlay as infrequently as possible. Often, airing it out is enough to freshen the smell. Speaking of fresh smelling, a wool crib underlay can sometimes have a sheep smell when you purchase it. This will disappear on its own, but if you find it particularly unpleasant, let the underlay air dry in a mist or in a humid environment first. For example, in the bathroom, in the steam from the shower. Then dry the underlay in a well-ventilated area.

If you have an accident and can't avoid washing the mat, do it by hand to minimize damage. Wash the wool mat at 30 degrees Celsius with wool detergent. If necessary, let the mat soak briefly. Then lay it flat (for example, on a clothes rack) to dry.

If you do use a washing machine, follow the care instructions on the label. Keep in mind that if your washing machine is older and doesn't have a special wool program, it's not suitable for washing wool. Older washing machines often run cold water into the drum first, which shocks the wool and causes it to shrink. (Too) cold water can also cause wool to shrink.
