Do you immediately think of an itchy jumper when you think of wool? That's not so strange — many types of wool feel coarse. Yet merino wool is totally different. This luxurious type of wool is incredibly soft, breathes well and doesn't prickle the skin. In this article you'll read why merino wool doesn't itch, what the difference is with ordinary wool and which types of merino wool exist.

Why ordinary wool sometimes itches or prickles

The reason wool can itch has everything to do with the thickness of the wool fibre. The thicker the fibre, the stiffer and more “prickly” it feels on the skin. When such a stiff fibre meets the skin, it doesn't bend along but pricks into the sensitive skin.

  • Ordinary sheep's wool often has fibres of 30 microns or more.
  • Merino wool, on the other hand, has ultra-fine fibres of just 16–19 microns.

That's why merino wool feels soft, supple and comfortable — even directly on a baby's skin.

The different types of merino wool: the finer, the softer

Not all merino wool is equally fine. The softness (and thus whether merino wool itches or prickles) depends on the micron value of the fibre. The lower the number of microns, the finer and more supple the wool is — and the softer it feels on the skin.

Type of merino wool Micron value Softness Suitable for
Strong merino 23–25 microns Slightly coarse Outerwear, blankets
Medium merino 20–22 microns Soft, but noticeable Jumpers, cardigans
Fine merino 18.5–19.5 microns Soft and comfortable Shirts, leggings
Superfine merino 17–18 microns Silky soft Baby clothing and underwear
Ultrafine merino 16 microns or less Luxurious, extremely soft Premium baby products, lingerie

The merino wool that Lille Barn uses falls into the superfine to ultrafine category. With fibres of around 16.5–17 microns, this wool feels incredibly soft — even on the most sensitive baby skin.

That's how we guarantee that our wool bodysuits, playsuits and hats don't itch or prickle, but instead give a warm, breathable and comfortable feeling.

Merino wool doesn't itch — and this is why

Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep, a breed that originally comes from Australia and New Zealand. These animals live in extreme conditions: warm summers, cold winters. So their wool has to breathe, insulate and feel soft.

  • merino wool bends along with your skin instead of pricking;
  • the wool is much softer than ordinary wool;
  • it feels comfortable even on sensitive skin types.

That's why merino wool is often used for baby bodysuits, wool playsuits and hats — clothing worn directly on the skin.

Still experiencing itching? These could be the causes

Although merino wool normally doesn't itch, irritation can sometimes occur. That's usually not down to the wool itself, but to other factors:

  1. Blended yarns – Some garments aren't made of 100% merino wool but contain synthetic fibres that become static or chafe.
  2. Detergent residue – Too much or aggressive detergent can leave a film that makes the fibre coarse. So always use a gentle wool detergent, such as the Lille Barn wool detergent, and rinse well.
  3. Dryness or sensitive skin – Especially in children, dry skin can react more sensitively. Merino wool, however, is naturally hypoallergenic and self-cleaning, which is why it is often tolerated better than cotton or synthetic fabrics.

How to keep merino wool soft and comfortable

  • Wash merino wool with a special wool detergent without enzymes or fragrance.
  • Use a wool programme at a maximum of 30°C.
  • Dry flat and avoid the tumble dryer.
  • Avoid fabric softener — it damages the natural wool fibre.

This preserves the natural elasticity and keeps the fabric wonderfully soft.

Merino wool: softness that doesn't prickle

In short: if you ever thought that wool always itches or prickles, then you've probably never felt real merino wool. The ultra-fine fibres make merino wool unique: warm in winter, cool in summer and incredibly soft on the skin.

That's why we at Lille Barn choose 100% merino wool for our collection — from wool bodysuits to soft hats and blankets. Perfect for sensitive baby skin, without ever itching.

Summary

  • Wool itches when the fibres are too thick (more than 30 microns).
  • Merino wool doesn't prickle, thanks to ultra-fine fibres of 16–19 microns.
  • There are different types of merino wool: the lower the micron value, the softer the wool.
  • Itching is usually caused by incorrect wash care or blended yarns.
  • 100% superfine merino wool stays soft, breathable and comfortable — even for babies.
